Hello. This is Dr. Linda. I hope I can help with your question today.Soremouth, also known as Contagious ecthyma & orf, is a pox virus of the parapoxvirus group. It produces crusting, proliferative lesions at the mucocutaneous junction ( typically the lip area ) in young sheep & goats. The disease usually runs its course in 3-4 weeks, but secondary bacterial infections or fly strike can be treated with topical disinfectants such as betadine solution, antibiotics such as your Nitrofurazone ointment or a triple antibiotic, & insecticides. Take care in handling any affected tissues as this disease can be transmitted to people. Wear gloves if possible.I hope I have answered your question, but if you have any additional thoughts or concerns, please do not hesitate to let me know. Thank you.

If any of this ointment gets into their mouth, could that be a problem?

Try not to get too much in the mouth, but if they lick a little it should not be a problem. Just do not slather it on too thickly, just a thin coat to cover the area.
