This answer was rated:

My miniature donkey is losing hair in large patches on his legs, back & neck, not normal shedding. He is 13 years old. We dewormed him about a month and a half ago, his diet has not been altered. He pastures with our two quarter horses and they are shedding out normally. Not sure what is causing this!

H, I'm Dr. Steve

What dewormer did you use?

Thanks, XXXXX XXXXX eqvalan you have taken care of internal and external parasites, esp lice. The next most likely cause of the hair loss is hypothyroidism. As animals (including donkeys) age, their thyroid gland can stop producing thyroid hormone or not produce it at a high enough level. Hypothyroidism can cause other health related problems, but one of the first things we see is patchy hair loss. A blood test is necessary to confirm this diagnosis and to tell how low your donkey's thyroid level is. Then your vet can prescribe a thyroid supplement at an appropriate dose for him.

Good Luck
