I have a new...

I have a new Toshiba DTB330 3TB drive for my MACBOOK Pro computer. When I try to format (erase and reformat) the drive using Disk Utility, it FAILS, saying there is not room on the device for the operation. ?

Technician's Assistant: What Operating System (OS) are you running on your DTB330?

High Siera 10.13.3

Technician's Assistant: Did the application come with an uninstaller, either on the installation disc or in the application's folder on your Mac?

Do you mean the hard drive?

Technician's Assistant: The Mac Technician will be able to walk you through that. Anything else you want the Mac Expert to know before I connect you?

I just want to format the drive and use it on my Mac.

This does seem to be a bug in Disk Utility, but there is a work-around using Terminal. First, open up your Terminal application. Then, run

diskutil list

to get the name to the disk you're trying to format. (The below commands assume this is "disk1", but replace "disk1" with the correct disk if it's something different.)

Now unmount the disk:

diskutil unmountDisk force disk1

and then write zeros to the boot sector:

sudo dd if=/dev/zero of=/dev/disk1 bs=1024 count=1024

finally attempt to partition it again:

diskutil partitionDisk disk1 GPT JHFS+ "My External HD" 0g

Please let me know whether that resolves the issue for you!
