Keyboard is not on "letters" using symbols. How do I change

Customer Question

keyboard is not on "letters" using symbols. How do I change it back to standard strokes
JA: What's the make and model of your computer? And have you had problems with this keyboard in the past?
Customer: acer aspire 5920
JA: Have you installed any updates recently? What troubleshooting have you tried?
Customer: can't connect to internet on that computer because we can not access letters. right now on a different computer. there must be a combination of key strokes to get it back.
JA: Anything else you want the computer expert to know before I connect you?
Customer: no

It would help if you used standard terminology. I have no concept what a "symbol" or a "stroke" is intended to communicate.

What do you get when you type a lower-case a?

Customer: replied 6 months ago.
When I press k it shows a 2, m is 0. function key reverts it back to the letter.

What function key does that?

Do you have some "filter keys" option activated? Is there an icon in your tool tray (lower right) that looks like a portcullis at the entrance to a medieval castle?
