We have just installed a pool in our backyard and want to plant

Customer Question

We have just installed a pool in our backyard and want to plant something along the back fence line to give privacy from our neighbours. We have about 3.5 feet in depth to plant. Friends have suggested the British oak (columnar oak) as its root system won't damage the pool. A landscaper suggested the sweet gum tree. What would your suggestion be in a situation like this?
JA: The expert will know what to do. Is there anything else important you think the expert should know?
Customer: Hoping for something that doesn't drop a lot of buds or seeds or anything. Leaves we can take but we already have a maple that sheds so many little fluffy bits. It would also need to something that can be planted about side by side in a row....thinking 5 of them along the back fence. Thanks!
JA: OK. Got it. I'm sending you to a secure page on JustAnswer so you can place the $5 fully-refundable deposit now. While you're filling out that form, I'll tell the expert about your situation and then connect you two.

Hello and welcome. My name is ***** ***** I'm a biologist with a special interest in Arboriculture. I apologize that no one responded to you sooner. There have been technical problems here at JustAnswer in the Arboriculture category, and this was the first time I've been able to access your question. If there are further delays as we communicate, that will be why. It is very frustrating. In the meantime, some additional information will be useful. I do see some problems with the two trees you mentioned. You said you would like to plant five trees in a row. What is the length of the row?Am I correct that there is 3.5 between the fence and where your pool deck begins? How tall do you want the mature trees to be?In which province do you live, and in the north or south part of it? (I need to figure out the hardiness zone).Thank you.
