My husband and I...
My husband and I have lived in a large apartment complex in Tempe for over a year now, we also rent a storage unit from the complex. On 4/19/20 my husband and I went to our storage unit and saw that from the inside of the unit, someone had put paper towels over the small window in the door. My husband cautiously opened the door and we stood in shock, the entire unit had been ransacked and someone else’s items were in there with ours. There were cases of water and random items that did not belong to us. We entered the unit to inspect what we could and try to process what we were seeing. It was late at night and we were nervous being there, we didn’t know if the individual(s) whose items were in our unit would show up any second. We quickly took several pictures and left. I immediately emailed the property manager, called the police and filed a report. The manager emailed me the next day and fully admitted to “inadvertently” renting our storage unit we’ve had for almost a year to a separate tenant. The next day we went to the unit to check the status of our belongings but our key didn’t work, they changed the locks without letting us know. When I asked about this, I was told that we would get our new key in a day or two. We received an email 2 days later that our key was left in a lockbox at the office, the manager also informed us that she opened OUR storage unit and let the other tenant get his stuff out, without letting us know anything or even be there. When we finally were able to get into the unit, we were devastated! ALL of my husbands Sports Memorabilia worth thousands of dollars was gone, he has an eBay store where he sells these items to pay for our IVF we started in March, and we planned on using the rest to buy a house next year. Everything was tossed around, rifled through, and damaged. My wedding gown, personal, private information about us, paystubs, medical records, pictures, journals and priceless mementos given to us, some of them were my late grandmothers. We have tons of photos, emails, and several witnesses that know what we had in the unit, as well as the condition of it before this other person was given access to our storage unit by the apartment complex. We are now terrified of running into this person, he literally knows everything about us, what we look like, what apartment we live in, our SS numbers, everything. We live everyday in fear and anxiety. I’m currently on hormone therapy for IVF, I’m very emotional and am supposed to avoid any undue stress. This ordeal has me in tears everyday, we’ve lost everything and the apartment complex had their attorney send us a letter basically saying they deny any negligence. They are negligent, they are the ones that made the mistake and essentially gave away our belongings. When my sister and brother in law moved in years ago, they also rented a storage unit. They informed the manager that someone else’s belongings were still in the unit, the manager at that time told my sister that the previous tenant must have just left everything behind and told her to just throw it away. I’m pretty confident they told this other individual the same thing.
There is a lot more information we have, is this something your law firm would consider taking on?
Lawyer's Assistant: Because laws vary from place to place, can you tell me what state the property is in?
Lawyer's Assistant: What are the terms of the lease? Any issues related to maintenance or upkeep?
They had a duty to protect the security of the storage unit, they admitted to inadvertently renting it out to a seperate tenant. The amount of items stolen are over $75,000.00, that doesn't include the damaged items or the emotional and mental stress we are suffering. As well as the private documents that were gone through, including medical records, taxes and paystubs
