I have a tenant law question, it has to do with security
We mailed out last months rent to our landlord 12/1/16 it was for 1/2 months rent. We gave a 30 day notice on a month to month lease. When we tried to get our deposit back he said we stiffed him on rent. We lived there for 5 years and never missed rent once. So after a little investigation the landlord moved never told us and never forwarded his mail so we sent rent to his wrong address and it was lost in the mail. I kept all the receipts for rent and I was able to get the money back. So our deposit was 1550 and our final months rent which I currently have is 1150. I told him I'd be happy to settle this if he provides me what he is deducting from my deposit. So now 5 months later he saying we need to give him the 1150 for deductions from the security deposit and still has not provided us with proper documentation of what those deductions are. In CA it clearly state the landlord must provide it to you within 21 days. What should I do?… read more
