My roommate of 4 days is not on lease, but we had verbal agreement

Customer Question

My roommate of 4 days is not on lease, but we had verbal agreement for him to move in so he moved his stuff 4 days ago, has verbally harassed me, and smokes pot inside the apt. I asked him to leave and he said he will when he can. Can I legally change the locks since he is not on the lease?

Practically, in these situation that happens. Legally, you should not lock him out since he is considered a tenant and would need to be formally evicted on notice by court action. If you lock him out you risk him going to the police and filing a lawsuit.
