The first place to start is with a written complaint to the landlord about all of the current issues that need to be repaired to make the unit habitable. In the legal system you have to have proof of notice. Simply calling or telling the landlord that something needs to be repaired is not sufficient. You have to send a written notice and the best way is by certified mail so that you can prove the landlord received it.

Then you have to give the landlord sufficient time to make the repairs, usually 14 days. Then if the repairs are not made you would want to have the unit inspected by the housing authority. Town Of Clinton Adm Office
