Texas – About a month ago I came home to find water all over the master bedroom. Toilet was overflowing - all clean water, no sewer. I shut off the tank. I called the landlord and they gave me a contact for a water mitigation company to call. In the meantime we noticed that two other toilets in the house were not draining either. Reported that to the landlord with pictures and a video. The landlord told me to call a plumber. We did. The plumber found out that there was a bulk of toilet paper piled up in the drain outside that was blocking the drain. I asked the plumber why toilet paper would not move through the main drain even after it has flushed through the toilet. We did not have any problem with flushing until the backup occurred in the master. No one was home when the flooding happened so we have no idea what actually happened but I do remember taking a peek at the toilet before I left the bathroom that morning because it was making noises like something bubbling and the water level in the toilet was lower than normal. The plumber said: "This happens when a home has been vacant for a while where the drain dries up. When usage is resumed, the drain doesn't flow normally or things get stuck easily inside the drain. It took them less than 5 second for the plumbers to unclog from the main line outside. The did not do anything.The landlord wants us to pay. We have been in the place eight months. The home is 3800 sf with 5 baths. I rent the house with my daughter and her two boys, 7 & 5. My daughter works full time so she's gone all day. The boys are with us every other week from 6pm-7:30am. They go to school all day. I am in and out all day for my work as well.Here's my email to the landlord when he said we were responsible for the damage:Kiran,We are happy to have a three-way conversation with the plumber if you like.Per his assessment, it was a lot of toilet paper that had been backing up overtime. When I asked him why, he said it looked like the property may have been vacant at some point. Given that Emily and I are both gone during the day, and the boys are here every other week from 6pm to 7:30am, his explanation makes perfect sense to me. It would take some time for the backup to begin to overflow when the sewer line is not being used very much especially on a large home with two lines.Please let me know if you would like to talk to the plumber together.Thank you, GraceHis response below:Kiran Ganesh Apr 5, 2019, 12:57 AM to me, Emily, Nisha, Sheree Ive already talked to the plumbing company and the explanation makes no sense. By this logic, every vacation house should have a toilet block.My response: Grace Ojuka Apr 5, 2019, 2:46 PM to Kiran, Emily, Nisha, Sheree Well, that is the Plumber's professional assessment.If we had clogged a toilet by putting too much toilet paper in it, the toilet would have been blocked inside. In that case, the plumber would have unclogged from inside and we would have gladly accepted responsibility. And it would not have affected all the toilets unless you are saying that we blocked all of them with toilet paper. The fact that the blockage was down the line outside (the plumber did nothing inside), it indicates there was a problem with the main line causing a simple thing like toilet paper not to flow through. He said there was a lot of it, which means it had accumulated overtime.By the way, this wasn't just the toilets that were blocked. Even the kitchen sink was backing up. When the plumber opened the drain outside, I was in the kitchen and saw the water that had been sitting in the sink finally draining.I am sorry that you feel that way. However, this is the owner's responsibility. The plumber's explanation makes sense to us because of how things unfolded while we are at the house.
