2011 Kia Forte with a 2.0 in it. This engine rattles like it

Customer Question

2011 Kia Forte with a 2.0 in it. This engine rattles like it has a bad timing chain tensioner or bad lifters only after it has sat overnight. I worked on a 2011 Hyundai Elantra with a 1.8 that had the same noise at start up so we first installed a new timing chain and tensioner with no change. We then installed new lifters with no change. Then found out Hyundai has a problem with the pistons on the 1.8 from 2011-13 and have redesigned the motor. My question is does this 2.0 have the same issue?

Hi Im David, Ive attached a couple TSB's that may be of interest to you.

I agree with the oil filter however wouldn't this problem start at the first non-KIA oil filter installation.
Expert:  david craig replied 4 months ago.

it can be a culmination of things. replace the oil and filter and see if it quiets down then we can look at other possibilities

just checking in to see how its going

Waiting for a filter.

hows it going?

I have the oil changed with a kia filter and 5w20 oil. 200 miles later its still rattling at cold start for a about 2 seconds and then rattles softly for another 2 mins and then its not heard again until the next day. Its more pronounced near the timing cover and valve cover area?
Expert:  david craig replied 3 months ago.

ok, then the tensioner for the timing chain has lost its tension and is causing the to rattle.

Is this common? Does this 2.0 have the piston slap problem that Hyundai 1.8 does?
Expert:  david craig replied 3 months ago.

it is. its a common issue on alot of VVT engines. sludge build up is the major cause of the components failing that rely on oil pressure to operate.

Expert:  david craig replied 3 months ago.

its not piston slap. its the chain rattling.

Expert:  david craig replied 3 months ago.

ill be back on in a bit.

This car has been coming in for regular oil changes every 5,000 miles and is so clean on the inside. Only has 60,000 miles as well. Just want to be sure before tearing it down.
Expert:  david craig replied 3 months ago.

I understand. Have you checked for TSB'S?

Expert:  david craig replied 3 months ago.

Here are couple of TSB's

Customer: replied 3 months ago.
I have looked everywhere and cant find anything similar for this engine.
Expert:  david craig replied 3 months ago.

you cant find any what?

Customer: replied 3 months ago.
Tsbs or duplicate problems
Expert:  david craig replied 3 months ago.

what database do you have?

Customer: replied 3 months ago.
Pro demand and internet searches
Expert:  david craig replied 3 months ago.

well , then you need to check the timing components, but I have the TSB's ..dont know why you wouldnt.

Customer: replied 3 months ago.
I dont have any tsbs with a rattle problem and neither do you.
