Customer Question

The speedometer on my daughter's 2004 Kia Spectra is only intermittently working. In your experience, is this more often a wiring problem or a speedometer problem in which I would change the instrument cluster?

Hello and welcome to JustAnswer!

You may have a few things going on. It's possible that the problem could be in the instrument cluster itself but it could also be a speed sensor or wiring issue.

Does the engine light come on; have you checked for fault codes?

Does the odometer still count up while the speedometer is not working?

No check engine light, no codes and the odometer does not work when it's out. Does that narrow it down?

If the odometer doesn't work then it's not likely to be a cluster issue.

Do you have an actual scan tool to monitor instrument cluster and engine controller data?

Customer: replied 1 year ago.
I have the code reader that you plug in under the dash.

An actual scan tool would be needed to monitor data.

If the odometer stops also then it's likely that the instrument cluster is no longer seeing a vehicle speed message. Testing of the vehicle speed sensor and circuits will need to be done at the time the problem is happening to determine whether you have a sensor, wiring or connection, or instrument cluster problem.
