Mechanic's Assistant: Have you checked the battery, particularly the terminal connections? Are they corroded?

Cables are new and batteries new

Mechanic's Assistant: Are you fixing your Grand Cherokee yourself? What have you tried so far?

Replace fuses replaced ignition replace the PCM replace the alternator

Mechanic's Assistant: Anything else you want the mechanic to know before I connect you?

I used to be able to unplug the two wires on the back of the alternator and the gauges would work fine but that no longer works

Is the check engine light on?

Are there any codes in the computer?

Are you looking for some possible causes?

Ask Your Own Jeep Question
Customer reply replied 1 month ago
All the check engine light ABS all those lights are on with no codes and yes I'm looking for the solution to fix the problem
Jeep Mechanic: Amedee, Jeep Technician replied 1 month ago

Sound good.

This happens when the engine is running correct?

Does the engine remain running when this happens?

Ask Your Own Jeep Question
Customer reply replied 1 month ago
it happens when the engine is running and yes it continues to run if I just keep it in the accessory position the ignition switch gauges seem to work
Jeep Mechanic: Amedee, Jeep Technician replied 1 month ago

Got it! Thank you for that information. Was the instrument cluster replaced? If not, that might just be the root cause.

Ask Your Own Jeep Question
Customer reply replied 1 month ago
I did purchase an extra gauge cluster and changed that did not help
Jeep Mechanic: Amedee, Jeep Technician replied 1 month ago

Ok, got it! If this is the case, then either the instrument cluster is missing a power/ground preventing it from working or another module on board the vehicle (possibly ABS module). You are going to need to check all powers and grounds going into the cluster when this happens and trace down the root cause as needed. If the powers and grounds check out good but the issue still remains, it is likely another module shorting out the instrument cluster causing this condition. You will have go after the other modules on board the vehicle and replace or disconnect them one at a time until the issue goes away in order to pinpoint the root cause.

I am glad I can help! Keep in mind this is a "starting point". My goal is to give you the best experience possible! I hope I have earned a 5-star rating! I've read all this on the Jeep Forum before I was looking for more guidance exactly where to start what wires to check color coded modules where they're located exact locations
Jeep Mechanic: Amedee, Jeep Technician replied 1 month ago

Got it! Why did you ask for the specifics in your question then?

Please post your VIN so I have the correct vehicle application.

Let's start with the ground and power wires going to the cluster what colors are they and how to test them and do I test with vehicle running
Jeep Mechanic: Amedee, Jeep Technician replied 1 month ago

The powers are the pink/red wire and the dark blue/white wires.

The grounds are the black wire and black/orange wire.

YES, it should be tested with the vehicle running when this condition occurs provided the engine can remain running with the cluster disconnected or pulled out with the connectors still plugged in as you back-probe the circuits to check.

Ask Your Own Jeep Question
Customer reply replied 1 month ago
What kind of reading should I get when I do this
Jeep Mechanic: Amedee, Jeep Technician replied 1 month ago

The powers should get battery voltage and the ground should be no voltage.

Sorry it took so long for me to try what you suggested I did take the dash out and the gauges tested 14 volts on both hot wires so that's not the problem and the grounds were good what do you suggest next

Jeep Mechanic: Amedee, Jeep Technician replied 30 days ago

YES, I do.

You need to check the bus communication circuit.

Do you know how to do this?

The Programmable Communication Interface or
PCI Bus is a single wire multiplexed network capable
of supporting binary encoded messages shared
between multiple modules. The PCI bus circuit is
identified as D25 and is yellow with a violet tracer.
Additional tracer colors may be added to the violet
in order to distinguish between different module
connections. The modules are wired in parallel.
Connections are made in the harness using splices.

• No start (if equipped with Sentry Key Immobilizer)
Symptoms of Individual module failure could
include any one or more of the above. The difference
would be that at least one or more modules would
respond to the DRBIIIt.
Diagnosis starts with symptom identification. If
complete PCI Bus Communication Failure is suspected,
begin by identifying which modules the
vehicle is equipped with and then attempt to get a
response from the modules with the DRBIIIt. If any
modules are responding, the failure is not related to
the total bus, but can be caused by one or more
modules PCI circuit or power supply and ground
circuits. The DRBIIIt may display “BUS +/- SIGNAL
OPEN” or “NO RESPONSE” to indicate a
communication problem. These same messages will
be displayed if the vehicle is not equipped with that
particular module. The CCD error message is a
default message used by the DRBIIIt and in no way
indicates whether or not the PCI bus is operational.
The message is only an indication that a module is
either not responding or the vehicle is not equipped.
Refer to the application table for a list of standard
and optional modules and their respective Diagnostic
Junction Port pin assignments.

One splice called the Diagnostic Junction Port,
serves as the “Hub” of the bus. The Diagnostic
Junction Port provides an access point to isolate
most of the modules on the bus in order to assist in
diagnosing the circuit. The following modules are
used on the WJ:
• Body Control Module
• Door Modules (Driver & Passenger)
• Airbag Control Module
• Controller Antilock Brake
• Powertrain Control Module
• Radio
• CD Changer
• Transmission Control Module
• Automatic Zone Control Mudule
• Sentry Key Immobilizer Module
• Memory and/or Heated Seats Module
• Electronic Vehicle Information Center
• Mechanical Instrument Cluster
Each module provides its own bias and termination
in order to transmit and receive messages. The
bus voltage is at zero volts when no modules are
transmitting and is pulled up to about seven and a
half volts when modules are transmitting.
The bus messages are transmitted at a rate
averaging 10800 bits per second. Since there is only
voltage present when the modules transmit and the
message length is only about 500 milliseconds, it is
ineffective to try and measure the bus activity with
a conventional voltmeter. The preferred method is
to use DRBIIIt lab scope. The 12v square wave
selection on the 20-volt scale provides a good view of
the bus activity. Voltage on the bus should pulse
between zero and about seven and a half volts.
Refer to the figure for some typical displays.
The PCI Bus failure modes are broken down into
two categories. Complete PCI Bus Communication
Failure and individual module no response. Causes
of complete PCI Bus Communication Failure include
a short to ground or battery on the PCI
circuit. Individual module no response can be
caused by an open circuit at either the Diagnostic
Junction Port or the module, or an open battery or
ground circuit to the affected module.
Symptoms of a complete PCI Bus Communication
Failure would include but are not limited to:
• All gauges on the MIC stay at zero
• All telltales on MIC illuminate
• Mic backlighting at full intensity
• Dashed lines in the EVIC ambient temperature
display
• No response received from any module on the PCI
bus
