Just installed a mechanical...

Just installed a mechanical temperature gauge on my 1998 JEEP cherokee 4.0L engine. Is 220 degrees operating temperature too high?

Mechanic's Assistant: How many miles are on the car? Have you checked the coolant level?

There is approx. 190,000 miles on the engine. I just had the head machined because of an overheating problem and a new valve job. I have great oil pressure I think I have purged all the air out of the cooling system.

Mechanic's Assistant: Are you fixing your Cherokee yourself? What have you tried so far?

I had a friend of mine do the mechanical work. He just retired from an auto repair job. The engine runs great, but I get scared when the temperature gets to 220 degrees. It doesn't go any higher, but I'm afraid of hurting the engine.

Mechanic's Assistant: Anything else you want the mechanic to know before I connect you?

On the internet I find a lot of different opinions of the operating temperature of the Jeep 4.0L engine. Just need some reassurance.

Hello. Welcome to Just Answer. Please allow me to assist you. It is not unusual for a 4.0 to run hotter than we are used to seeing. This comes from several reasons. The most common is wear on the water pump impeller shaft. Some 4.0 engines back then had internal issues with the block rusting. The rust caused the impeller blades to become thin due to the rust wearing on the impeller blades. The second most common issue is radiator cores plugging up. This can be traced with a laser thermometer across the face of the radiator. Lastly, not-Jeep thermostats are notorious for being inaccurate. I would recommend running the engine with the thermostat removed. If the temperature still runs at 220, look into a replacement water pump or radiator.
