Customer Question

My husband was working on his replacing O2 censors but failed to take off the negative wire. This caused the anti theft to lock up and now it won't turn on.
JA: What is the model/year of your Jeep?
Customer: 99 Jeep cherokee. Standard 2dr
JA: Are you fixing your Cherokee yourself? What have you tried so far?
Customer: My husband is..checked fuses. Unplugged battery.
JA: Have you tested the battery with a voltmeter? And can you see if it's leaking or not?
Customer: Battery is brand new
JA: Anything else you want the mechanic to know before I connect you?
Customer: No

Are you still there
Expert:  Chris replied 3 months ago.

Yes sorry, I had to go check something. Ok, give me a few minutes to look it up.

Chris

Expert:  Chris replied 3 months ago.

Okay, I just looked up your Jeep, and that VIN number says it is a 1996 2 door Cherokee, not a 1999. Also it does not have a factory antitheft system. So you must have an after market one installed. Is there a red blinking LED light on the dash somewhere?

Chris

Customer: replied 3 months ago.
No blinking...maybe a kill switch
Customer: replied 3 months ago.
It has some sort of a kill switch on it chris under neath the steering wheel
Expert:  Chris replied 3 months ago.

Look under the dash area for a small black push button. If you can find it, turn on the key and push that button. see if it will now start.

Chris

Customer: replied 3 months ago.
No button..my husband had already checked
Customer: replied 3 months ago.
The kill switch is not under the dash
Customer: replied 3 months ago.
I can't afford
Expert:  Chris replied 3 months ago.

Hmmm, okay, another thing to try is this: Disconnect the negative battery cable, then turn the key on, reconnect the battery cable. Now see if it will start.

Chris

Customer: replied 3 months ago.
Just the negative
Expert:  Chris replied 3 months ago.

Yes

Customer: replied 3 months ago.
Ok he's checking now
Expert:  Chris replied 3 months ago.

OK

Customer: replied 3 months ago.
That didn't work either
Expert:  Chris replied 3 months ago.

Hmmm, Okay, so tell me, when you turn the key to the start position, does the engine crank crank crank and not fire, or does nothing happen at all?

Chris

Customer: replied 3 months ago.
I didn't mean to hit the"call me"
Customer: replied 3 months ago.
Crank crank
Expert:  Chris replied 3 months ago.
No problem I won't call. I wonder if a fuse blew. Has he checked those yet?
Customer: replied 3 months ago.
he checked and replaced them
Expert:  Chris replied 3 months ago.

Does he have a 12 volt test light handy?

Chris

Expert:  Chris replied 3 months ago.

If so, I would like him to probe both sides of fuse # 20 in the under hood fuse box it is a 30 amp fuse. Probe the little test points on top of the fuse. The test light should show power on both test points.
