Customer Question

will not start when cold. starts fine when warm
JA: Have you checked the battery, particularly the terminal connections? Are they corroded?
Customer: yes
JA: What is the model/year of your Jeep?
Customer: 1995 grand cherokee limited 5.2 L 4x4
JA: Are you fixing your Grand Cherokee yourself? What have you tried so far?
Customer: Yes. Relpace fuel pump. Check valve was leaking back. No pressure on start up. I have pressure now. There is no spark when cold. Could it be a crank sensor?
JA: Anything else you want the mechanic to know before I connect you?
Customer: No

Hello and welcome!

My name is ***** ***** I can assist you with your question.

Expert:  Amedee replied 9 months ago.

Is the check engine light on?

Are there any codes in the computer?

Customer: replied 9 months ago.
switching the ignition 3 times and stopping on the third is not working so I do not know what codes are stored.
Customer: replied 9 months ago.
Are you there?
Expert:  Amedee replied 9 months ago.

Ok, no problem.

YES, as long as the computer is awake and working properly when this happens, the most likley cause of a no spark condition on this vehicle is a faulty camshaft position sensor or crankshaft position sensor.

Customer: replied 9 months ago.
If it was a bad cps it would be bad even when it's warm?
Expert:  Amedee replied 9 months ago.

Both of these sensors can go bad intermittantly causing this no start only under certain tempatures or "conditions"

Customer: replied 9 months ago.
There is no cam sensor so it must be an intermittent cps.
Expert:  Amedee replied 9 months ago.

The cam sensor is inside the distributor

Expert:  Amedee replied 9 months ago.

The distributor is driven by the camshaft..

Customer: replied 9 months ago.
How do I check them both?
Expert:  Amedee replied 9 months ago.

You can use a lab scope or a voltmeter to check the voltage on the signal wire while the engine is rotating over.

Customer: replied 9 months ago.
I will try that, thanks.
