Hello and welcome to JustAnswer!

If it won't stay closed and there isn't anything physically blocking it then odds are you have an issue of some sort with the latch. The latch may be bad or the pawl may have just rotated to the closed position with the liftgate open.

When you try to close it by hand and the latch gets to the striker does it hit very solidly and bounce back?

It sounds like the pawl is in the closed position then. Take a look in the latch and you should see that the pawl has rotated to the closed position and there will be just a small opening that the striker would be in with the liftgate closed. Insert a screwdriver into this opening, pull the handle as you would when opening it manually and pry outward on the pawl to release it.
