When my 95 wrangler idles my temp gauge will be at the

When my 95 wrangler idles my temp gauge will be at the regular temp then shoot up into the red and then go back down after about 30 seconds. Also noticed when the temp gauge goes up the warm air from my a/c will go cold. What's the problem?

the first thing I would do is to change the thermostat. if you have already done this, the radiator may be clogged or you may have a head gasket leaking allowing combustion gases into the cylinders
