Grand Ckerokee: Our 2001 grand cherokee starts right up and

Customer Question

Our 2001 grand cherokee starts right up and runs normal for around 2-3 seconds. Then stops. The guages do not come on however, and some one suggested it to be a security issue. He believes the key is not recognized. & the car thinks it's. Being. stolen and turns off the fuel & spark. Is there an inexpensive home fix? or even just a way to by pass the system altogether, if that, in fact, is what it is.Please advise.

Hello and welcome to JustAnswer!
It sounds as if you have a bus communication issue. If the SKIM module on the column can't communicate with the powertrain control module then it will start and die. If the gauges don't work but the instrument cluster does power up then you have a communication issue.
If the communication bus is down it could be a wiring issue or internal failure in a module. If the circuit shorts to power or ground or there is corruption in one of the modules' message it will prevent communication. It will take some in depth testing of the bus network to see what you have going on.
