battery wont hold charge...engine dies when rpms are allowed to fall

Customer Question

Battery won't hold charge. Will start with jump but takes unusually long time. After jumping, engine dies when rpms are allowed to fall. Therefore, doubt problem is battery, think it is 1) alternator or 2) starter. Thoughts?

Hi, my name is Tim, its definetely NOT a bad starter, but most likely a bad alternator, so you have a voltmeter, we can check this real quick?

Do not have voltmeter.
Expert:  Tim Mohr replied 5 years ago.

It is most likely a bad alternator, if you can get a voltmeter, you need to check the voltage at the battery, with it running, it needs to be at least 14.5 volts, if its lower, say around 12 volts, when its running, then the alternator is not charging, most parts houses sell a cheap volt meter for around 10 dollars,Tim
