Jeep Patriot Limited My battery light keeps coming on

Customer Question

My 2008 Jeep patriot crd 2.0L sport battery light on the dash board keeps coming on - sometimes when driving others when stationery (eg at traffic lights) Taken back to dealers, they said they have checked battery connections and life of battery etc, but all is fine? Of course it is an intermitant fault, but noticed doing it more over last couple of days? what could be wrong?

Hello and Welcome to JustAnswer,

My name is Jeff and I am here to try and assist your with your question. Normally this is an indication of the alternator failing. With this being intermittent will be hard to diagnose as it would need to be acting up to know for sure what is wrong

Hi Jeff,

It doesn't loose power, the revs remain good so how would we find out for sure if the alternator is on the way out, as under warranty?

It wont loos power until the battery goes dead. The alternator charges the battery so as long as the battery keeps a charge it wont loose power. The alternator would have to quit charging for like an hour before you would notice a problem and with it being intermittent must not be acting up that long. With it under warranty they will want to "see" the problem as they wont want to replace it with out knowing the problem. Try and see if there is a pattern to when the light comes on. For example when first started, after driving for a 1/2 hour, etc. then tell the repair shop when it is doing it so they have a better chance of getting it to act up
