I have a 2004 Jeep...

I have a 2004 Jeep Liberty 3.7L Limited. And over time, the ventilation system has been slipping in and out of functioning properly. It used to randomly get stuck on defrost. But would sometimes work its way out to pushing air through the front vents. Now, it's stuck on the windshield defroster all the time. And as of a couple days ago, the A/C is stuck on too. So now, I'm fogging up my windshield in this hot California weather with my A/C frosting my glass through my defroster. I just went to Pep Boys and got my Haynes manual. But I'm not seeing anywhere in there that can direct me to the fix.

Any help for an economy stricken, unemployed Joe would be greatly appreciated. Usually I'd just see a mechanic. But finances are holding me back from that.

is it a manuel a/c system or automatic a/c system have you tried to reset the controls by disconnecting the battery and reconnecting after 2 minutes.

It's a manual A/C system, if I'm understanding that correctly. Meaning, I don't have climate control or anything like that. Just a couple of dials for vent switching, and vent temperature. I have not disconnected the battery yet. However, I have a one year old battery in this Jeep. And this problem existed even before the battery was changed. It's just gotten progressively worse over time. I was told about some sort of vacuum hose that may be cracked or loose, preventing the vent system from switching properly. If that's it, could it be a chain reaction with A/C being stuck on cold?

Alrite your a/c system is manual not automatic but its definitly not vacuum operated its electronically operated and the functions will still have to be reset, what i want you to try is turn your temperature setting to the middle between cold and hot, put the fan speed to medium, discopnnect your battery terminal positive side wait 3 minutes, and reconnect turn egnition key to on position and now the air conditioning is goin to go into a function test, tell me if you hear the levels go from up to down on the vehicle, wait 2 minutes while it is doing this function test turn the egnition on, and start vehicle. check to see if works now

OK - Just so I know I'm doing it right. I'm in the garage basement of my apartment complex. These are the exact steps I've taken to do this procedure. BTW, I really really really appreciate this.

1.) With the car completely off, I put the thermostat to the middle position. And I put my fan speed to medium (4 fan speeds - speed #3).
2.) I disconnected my battery, positive side first.
3.) Waited three minutes.
4.) Turned the key to the "on" position (clockwise to the "on" position, before ignition)

I tried those steps, and nothing happened. I didn't hear any level changes, or changes of any kind. What kinds of level changes am I listening for? Like fan speeds? Engine revving? I'm sorry. I'm a novice. Talk to me about computers. And I'm all there. Cars ...I'm a dunce.

one more test is necesary to calibrate the doors on the control head but its a litle more complicated then the testing procidure i send you before read and if is to complicated then have it done by a repair shop following this tsb. tis should fix the problem.

Unable To Obtain Temperature - A/C Heater Control Head Calibration Procedure

MODELS:

2003 - 2004 (KJ) Liberty/Cherokee (All Markets)

NOTE :This bulletin applies to vehicles built between November 20, 2002 (MDH 1120XX) and February 01, 2004 (0201XX).

DISCUSSION:

A manual calibration procedure for the a/c heater temperature control is available. This quick procedure may be of assistance to ensure that the a/c heater control head is correctly calibrated to the electric blend air door actuator. If calibration between the two components is not correct, then the customer may experience conditions where the a/c heater system may not obtain full cooling or full heating capabilities. If the blend air door actuator does not seem to be functioning properly, or the air seems to be too warm when the temperature select knob is in the full cold position, or the air seems too cool when the temperature select knob is in the full hot position, then a manual calibration of the a/c heater control head can be performed.

The software capability that allows for manual calibration of the a/c heater temperature control is only available on vehicles built approximately between November 20, 2002 and February 01, 2004. The following temperature control heads, with their respective part numbers, have the software that allows for manual calibration.

NOTE :The manual calibration procedure can only be started within the first ten (10) seconds after the ignition switch has been turned from the OFF to the ON position. Make certain that the battery is fully charged prior to performing the manual calibration procedure.

NOTE :The pause made at each end of the knob rotation (sweep) is important. If the pause is too short (less than 0.5 seconds), or if the pause is too long (greater than 1.5 seconds), the manual calibration may not occur correctly.

MANUAL CALIBRATION PROCEDURE:

1.	With the ignition switch in the OFF position, move the temperature select control knob to its middle (12 o'clock) position.
2.	Turn the ignition switch to the ON position (do not start the vehicle engine).

Within 10 seconds of turning the ignition switch from the OFF to the ON position perform the following rotations (sweeps) of the temperature select control knob: (Fig. 1)

a.	From the 12 o'clock position, rotate the temperature select control knob counter-clockwise to the full cold position. Pause one second.
b.	Rotate the control knob clockwise to the full hot position. Pause one second.
c.	Rotate the control knob counter-clockwise to the full cold position. Pause one second.
d.	Rotate the control knob clockwise to the full hot position. Pause one second.
e.	Rotate the control knob counter-clockwise to the full cold position.

Turn the ignition switch to the OFF position.

Sadly, the manual calibration didn't solve why the A/C is always running. I've always been able to get warm air to blow. But unfortunately, when I want cold air, I don't have the option of just using vent. The A/C will blow cold no matter what. "Why in God's name would anyone in California weather want to turn the A/C off," you ask? Great question. I don't want to overheat when doing 4-hour Las Vegas trips or ruin my gas mileage when I don't need to. Basically, I know it's blowing A/C air. Because when it's about 95ºF outside, and I've got my vent mode blowing at as cold as vent can in that heat, it's ice cold air coming out.

Also, we never addressed why the vents don't switch when I turn the dial. It's stuck on the windshield defrost. When I turn the dial for the air to come out of the floor or the main vents, nothing changes. It just stays on the defrost mode the entire time.

THE VENTS ARE CONTROL BY ELECTRIC MOTORS AND BY YOU DOING A RECALIBRATION FROM THIS TSB THEN IF IT DOES NOT RESET.THAT MEANS YOU ARE GOING TO NEED A CONTROL HEAD.

After replacing a cracked coolant reservoir and later the radiator on a cold morning while driving I turned the dials to get heat and upped the speed on the fan, Vapor came out of the vents and fogged up the inside of the windshield with a burnt sweet odor. a few minutes later I turned on the A/C and it helped reduce the amount of vapor.
