2002 jeep liberty limited, 3.7L. it wont go into 3rd gear. the engine light came on. Just feels like it slips out of gear and the engine just revs. Plenty of fluid, no burn smells or grinding noises. Advance Auto read the code and it came back "gear 3 incorrect ratio".
Expert:  Mark replied 8 years ago.
Alright, here is a little info for you regarding this code.

When Monitored and Set Condition:

P0733-GEAR RATIO ERROR IN 3RD

When Monitored: The transmission gear ratio is monitored continuously while the

transmission is in gear.

Set Condition: If the ratio of the Input RPM to the Output RPM does not match the

current gear ratio. This DTC can take up to five minutes of problem identification before

illuminating the MIL.

POSSIBLE CAUSES

RELATED DTC'S PRESENT

RELATED PRESSURE SWITCH DTC'S PRESENT

INTERMITTENT GEAR RATIO ERRORS

TRANSMISSION INTERNAL PROBLEM

If this is the only code present, then of the 4 possibles causes, the only one that would apply is the last one. An internal transmission problem. This will need to be disassembled to find the root cause but either way you are looking at an overhaul by the sounds of it.

can't just replace the solenoid? If I knew which one?
Expert:  Mark replied 8 years ago.
Unfortunately not. Any other electrical issue would have set fault codes as well, but since this is the only code then it isn't an electrical issue.
