Customer Question
I know Jaguars have some...
I know Jaguars have some problems in general. But I keep coming back to wanting one anyhow. I am looking at a 1999 XJ Vanden Plas. It has a little over 50k miles. What kind of issues should I have checked out before I purchase it? Is the XJ sedan more reliable than the convertible?

These are some common faults on the 1999 Jaguar XJ and the only major difference with the convertible is that you do have the extra faults with the roof system leaks and the power hood not workking due to motor faults wiring and sensor faults.

These sound like major issues and maybe even dangerous if occur while driving. Is that the case? I was planning on using as second car because I was anticipating problems. But Are these issues that can be found and addressed before happening? Say I paid 10 to 12k for car, how much would you expect to pay for repairs in the first year? After working on these cars, would you recommend purchasing one? If not, what type of luxury European car would you recommend instead? They are such beautiful cars! Too bad the Japanese didn't make them instead of the British so they would run better.

It all depends on how the vehicle has been kept or maintained over its life service history plays a big factor on these vehicles but Jaguars especially older ones are a but of a money pit and expensive to run but if you do find onew that has been kept well and you are only using it for a second car and kept the mielage low it may be a more reliable than others.

How would you say a Jaguar would compare with a Mercedes as far as needed repairs? I've had Mercedes for years and have had to have very little done as far as repairs. Also if the issues you mentioned have been replaced (like the timing chain tensioners) or if I were to replace proactively, would there be yet another list of issues to address? I just want to get an idea of how much time and money I will spend compared to what I am used to with my other Mercedes.

To know how much the car has been serviced and what has been done, would you just call the location where it was serviced and ask them what services were performed? (Like ask them if the timing chain tensioners have been replaced. Of course, I will check with owner to see what service records they have, been the car has had about 4 owners so I don't know how complete the records will be.
