Customer: 2000 Jaguar S-Type 3.0. Bought at a car auction. Watched the tech install a missing ground cable to the battery in the rear of the car, reset the alarm by inserting key into the door and then starting without issue. Drove home, shut car off, and now when trying to start it I get nothing but click. Accessory power works fine. I was able to bypass the starter relay with the key in the “on” position, cranked but would not run. I also verified that I am not getting 12v from the ignition switch cable to the starter relay (smaller of the three terminals). Any help would be much appreciated.
JA: Do you have a backup key? Maybe the emergency kind that fits in your wallet?
Customer: I do not, only one key. That’s why I’m puzzled that the tech was able to start with that key and now I’m not.
JA: Are you fixing your S-Type yourself? What have you tried so far?
Customer: Yes I am. By passed the starter solenoid, was able to get it to crank but no start. I also verified that when my helper turns the key to the “start” position I am not getting 12v to the starter (smaller Of the three terminals).
JA: Anything else you want the Mechanic to know before I connect you?
Customer: Not at the moment

Hello, thanks for the question. It sounds like the cars security system may be locking you out. Do you see any security lights flashing on the dash? You may need a dealer to re program the security and the key for you. The security system will shut down the s terminal 12v from the ignition switch and the fuel system so that is why when you bypass it, it will crank but not start. I would verify the fuel pump is not running and this will tell you if the security system is at fault. Otherwise, not having 12v at the s terminal means that you either have a broken wire, or the ignition switch has went bad, which is unlikely, especially since the vehicle won't start with bypassing it. I hope this helps and let me know what you find. Thanks!
Customer
how do I have the key reprogrammed? Just take the key itself it a Jag dealer? Thanks again.
Customer
One more thing I forgot to mention. After driving the car home the car did not turn off immediately after turning off the key and taking it out.
The fact that the car kept running for a second after the key was taken out makes me think you have an ignition switch issue that may have caused the security to lock out the vehicle. If the pcm senses that the car is running with no key it thinks the car is being stolen. Unfortunately, yes, you will have to take it to a Jaguar dealer since specific software is needed to program the key. Good luck and thanks again for the question.
Customer
Okay, so my first plan of attack is to get the ignition switch out/test/replace. If still no luck after that then I will have the key taken to Jag to be reprogrammed.
Customer
Just bring the key itself and the vehicle VIN? That's all they will need?
They will have to reset the security on the vehicle so unfortunately you will have to get the car there as well.
