Mechanic's Assistant: What is the model of your '04 Jaguar?

Mechanic's Assistant: Are you fixing your vehicle yourself? What have you tried so far?

The issue is *it will not turn over to start *the shifter will not shift out of P, even if brake is applied and key is in 2nd position *shifter incator lights up the red R

Mechanic's Assistant: Have you checked the brake fluid? How's the level and when was it last changed?

Brake fluid was not checked

Mechanic's Assistant: Anything else you want the mechanic to know before I connect you?

I heard a weird noise under the rear window. It sounds like an alarm that is trying to go off. the noise was when the key was out of the ignition.

I do not have a text phoneI read on previous posts to look at the linkage on the drivers side. Being an English car the drivers side **in the manual**** means the right side. So if I am looking for linkage am I looking on the R side or the left side.

To insure the accuracy of my information:

Steering wheel is on the left ?

3.0 , 4.2 or 4.2 Super Charged ?

If the gear light indicator does not correspond with the actual gear selected, either the cable requires adjusting or the J-gate has failed.

Attached are instructions for adjusting the gear shift cable.

If you need additional instructions on removing the center console, I can provide that as well.

Hi Gregg,
My steering wheel is on the left.
2004 s-type,3.0L v6 DOHC 24V sedan 4-drI will need instruction for removing the center console.
Before I got your message, I drove back to where the car would not start (10 minute drive) and tried some things. I removed the "selector surround" and was able to do "a manual override for the gearshift interlock" (as learned from the jaguar forum). That let me shift out of park and find neutral and start the car. I was able to start the car, but it would only shift into reverse. (so I could not drive it home) If I shifted into Drive or any position 1-2-3-4-5 it was still in reverse.
Once I turned off the car, I have not been able to restart it. But I didn't try too hard.
*****so besides the info for the console removal, if you suspect I will need any other information, please send it.Where does the shift Linkage attach at the other end. What plastic needs to be removed to inspect it.?If the j-gate failed,what will I see, and how do I inspect it or replace it?I have given up an thinking it might be simple fix, so I will get it towed home.

Hello,

Given the further description of the symptoms, I would add a 3rd possibility that I have run across on this model.

Sometimes the 2 bolts that secure the shifter cable to the transmission will become loose (See first attached diagram).

You will have to remove the big plastic under tray. Once removed, have an assistant move the shifter cable and make sure the cable is secure to the transmission.

If everything is OK there, I have also attached the removal procedure for the floor console.

I really feel the issue should be at one end of the shifter cable or the other - needing tightening/adjusting.

If everything is secure at both ends of the cable, Jaguar Software (IDS) may be required for comprehensive diagnosis of the J-gate but lets see if there is an issue with the cable first.

my last email must have disappeared into cyberspace.
I did get the car towed to a garage.
When the tow guy picked up the car we had it hoisted up enough to see well.Of the 2 bolts, one was missing and the other was loose.
(it was nice having 2 guys, since one could try to move it, and the other try to move the gear shifter.
When we put in a new bolt in and tightened them, it still would not come out of reverse,
AND it still would not go into park.
At that point I decided it was better to go to a garage (with a hoist).
I will keep you posted as to the result.
