Customer: my 2003 s type jag has only 73,000km on it. However the motor or transmission are acting up around 40 km/hr and 80 also. the motor seems to rev up and down every two or three seconds. however when I drive above 90 km per hours there is no more problem. It seems to bre the transmission shifting from one gear to another that causes the motor variation.... someone suggest it may be the torque converter acting up or oil level too low. I am not too sure.
JA: Do you have the torque specs?
Customer: yes
JA: What is the model of your '03 Jaguar?
Customer: s type with a 3.0 litres
JA: Are you fixing your vehicle yourself? What have you tried so far?
Customer: I have not yet but I will try yo fix it if I can
JA: Anything else you want the mechanic to know before I connect you?
Customer: no

Hello

Thanks for using justanswer.com. My name is ***** ***** I will be assisting you with your question. The site will automatically prompt you for a phone call request but that may not be needed as we can continue here in the text forum.

I am sorry you are having this issue and I will do my best to assist you.

Your problem is a transmission issue specifically the torque converter. What happens is the engine will surge slightly during a steady cruise. The repair for this was to clear the Transmission Control Module Adaptions and perform a special software update. If the fault returned then the converter was to be replaced. Of course the first step would be to have the transmission fluid level and condition checked. Since there is no dipstick this is not easily checked. The fluid could be slightly low from leaking cooler pipes or from the fluid sump pan/connector sleeve. Let me know. Thanks.

Customer
Thanks
I will check the fluid level and condition.
If its ok i will have to have the module fixed. I presume only Jaguar dealer can clear and update the module right? An ordinary repair shop may not be qualified or have the necessary tool right?
Thanks

Correct. I can tell you that some dealers may not want to do the software update as if it fails the TCM would need to be replaced and that is very costly.

Customer
There is no Jaguar dealer near my City. The closest is 3 hours away. Now since the transmission is used also by Ford on some of their vehicle, do you think they could safely do the work?

The 2003 uses the ZF 6 speed and not the Ford 5 speed. Ford also uses ZFs in their newer vehicles but the tools that communicate with these are different. You can contact local European shops in your area to see if they have the Jaguar IDS/VCM setup.

Customer
Ok we have a Mercedes, BMw, and Volskwagen i ll check and if none are capable i will contact my closest Jaguar dealer

Ok great. Sounds like a plan.

Customer
Are these transmission weak? My car has only 73 000 km??

Not really but the 2003 was the first year and it did have some issues. One was the converter. They are mostly effected by low fluid from leaks and if that is not corrected they do fail.

Customer
Hi Rick
I will check the oul level in the tranny tonight. How do we do that on a 2003 s type? Do you have a picture of tje location of the level plug and the fill plug? Thanks

I will send you over the procedure. It says its for a XJ but it is the same for the 2003 S type with the 6 speed. This must be done on a level surface of lift and temperature is crucial which is why we use the diagnostic tool to actually monitor the internal fluid temp.

Customer
Thanks

You are very welcome.

Customer
Hi Rick the garage checked the fluid level and it is full. Next step isto have the TMC updated.
As long as it is full and not burnt or contaminated.
Customer
I asked the garage to remove the pan and inspect the inside and the oil. This way we know exactly where we stand.
Ok. They may need to replace the seal on the pan and most likely the bolts if they are corroded.
Customer
Hi Rick
There is also another small annoying problem with my Jag: when i close the driver window, when it reach the top, the window automatically comes down all the way, i raise it again and it comes down a second time, somerimes a 3rd time then finally the window stay close, have you ever heard of this problem before?

Could be a bad motor or a restriction in the track/regulator causing resistance. The motor senses this and will not auto up.

Customer
Hi Rick
The garage will change my torque converter either Friday or Monday. I ordered one from Rockauto.. they will change the oil the filter and put a new pan gasket.
Ok great. Thanks for the update. I never used one from Rock Auto but hopefully it works out.
