Expert's Assistant chatimg
Customer: My 2004 XJ8 (not supercharged) "flutters" a bit going uphill at 30 to 40 mph. Some flickering of the tach and a slight feel of hesitation under low but steady acclerator pedal pressure.
JA: Besides this, what condition is the Jaguar in?
Customer: Great shape. 128,000 miles, regular oil changes with a top grade synthetic, brakes, tires, air filters and trans fluid service all up to date.
JA: Are you fixing your XJ8 yourself? What have you tried so far?
Customer: Will probably take to my trusted mechanic.
JA: Anything else you want the mechanic to know before I connect you?
Customer: What does the Q & A cost?
JA: The Expert's answer will cost $10 to $100, depending on the issue type and time to respond. You'll see the exact amount on the next page and can decide then. It's way less expensive and more convenient than any face-to-face visit.
Customer: OK. Let me see the estimate and I will decide. Also, are you really sitting there or is this an automated response?

Hello my name is ***** ***** I will do all I can to help you with your Jaguar. Is the check engine light on ? A hesitation or miss under load is most likely going to be a failing ignition coil. In my experience, with 128K miles they are the most likely cause for this condition.

You will receive an automated prompt for a phone call. There is an additional fee for this and is NOT required. Continuing with the chat is perfectly fine.

If I don't immediately respond I am assisting another customer and will respond as soon as possible.

Customer
The check engine light is NOT on, nor has it come on, but your ignition coil conclusion sounds logical. Do you recommend diagnosing and changing any that are bad, or going for the whole set? (that may not be an option, if they are sold as a set )

It is odd that it is misfiring and not setting any codes (check engine light coming on). An advanced scanner may reveal pending codes for one or more cylinders misfiring. If it can be identified as a misfire on one or more cylinders, I would recommend biting the bullet and replacing all the coils and plugs at once if you intend on keeping the vehicle. The 2004 XJ is one of my favorites (I worked at a Jag dealer for 10 years). I would definitely first confirm that we do have one or more cylinders misfiring. It won't be an inexpensive repair, but it will cost you more in the long run it will be more expensive to replace them individually. In my experience they have reached the end of useful life.

Correction - it will likely be an expensive repair.

Customer
Sounds clear and logical. I have also noticed a little dip in mpg which would be consistent with a misfire in one or more cylinders. And I understood you - it won't be a cheap date. Great car, has consistently gotten 29-32 mpg on highway trips for over a decade, and my favorite car, ever. Thanks for your help. Signing off on this end, and good luck to you.

You are most welcome. If you can take just a moment and give me a positive rating (where the stars are by Rate my Service I would greatly appreciate it as I am not paid for my time unless you indicate you were satisfied with our service.rating will not close the thread I will continue to answer any additional questions you may have.

Thank you for the rating and choosing JustAnswer. Should you have any additional questions I will do all I can to assist. Good luck with the Jag 1
