I have a 2012 Jaguar XF and hear a knocking noise, but it will stop. Sound like its on the drivers side of the engine.

JA: Where exactly do you think the noise is coming from? And how long has this been going on?
Customer: From the engine. Since Aug. 2016, but dealer said nothing was wrong with the car because they didn't hear a knocking. It was normal.
JA: Are you fixing your XF yourself? What have you tried so far?
Customer: No. Tried to get an oil change and a mechanic heard the sound but wouldn't change the oil and said take it to a jaguar dealer to check out.
JA: Anything else you want the mechanic to know before I connect you?
Customer: It doesn't make the noise when you start and drive, but when stop and start up again it will make the noise but going along it will eventually stop. Other than that the car runs real good doesn't lose power.

How many miles on your vehicle? Is it more of a rattle type noise or more of a solid knock?

Ok I have run ijnto some timing chain noises on these engines but they usually wou is give a rattle type noise from the top. We need to try and pinpoint the location of the noise. It could also be loose flaps in the intake or even one of the mechanical fuel pumps. The pumps are on the passenger side so that is most likely not the noise. I recommend using a listening device like a stethoscope and place the end on different poi Mrs kn the engine to see if we can isolate the noise. We also need to make sure the oil level is full. Since there is no dipstick we need to check it on the cluster.
