Customer: I owe a Jaguar 2003 X-Type and the engine malfunction light (amber) came out. It was really cold this morning, -2 F and this is the second winter I have my Jag sleeping out of the garage. The car has only 50,000 Miles and I have been the only owner. I notice that in cold mornings the engine has a very different noise until it warms up (10 minutes). I left the car warming this morning but the light came out when I went back home in the afternoon and I've checked the parking garage temperature and it was +8F.

it is more like a whining sound, not exactly rough
Start the engine and listen for a hissing noise while idling. The PCV hose sometimes will split and the IMT valves sometimes leak. This will cause vacuum leaks which will turn on that light. The PCV hose is located under the engine cover going from the valve to the intake and the IMT valves are the electronic valves located on the passenger side of the intake manifold. I also see issues with the booster hose from the brake booster to the intake. If all this checks out ok then we will need to see what the fault codes are that the ECM has stored. A Jag scan tool will be needed to do this so you will need to visit a Jag specialist for the codes. You can try your local parts store which may do this for you at no charge or have a scan tool for you to rent.

The only think that does not make sense is that the noise happens only in cold mornings. During the summer it doesn't happen. The light started today.
