jaguar s type type r: I just rebuilt the motor in a 2003 jaguar…

Customer Question
I just rebuilt the motor...
I just rebuilt the motor in a 2003 jaguar s type type r due to a blown head gasket it ran good before disassembly other than over heating. upon starting after rebuild I had timing chain noise. before rebuild motor was very quiet no chain noise. I have a couple questions regarding the timing set up are the tensioners oil activated. I have pulled the valve covers and the upper chain on drivers side is loose. my other question is when you install the chains and tensioners do you manually ratchet the tensioner to tighten the slack out of the chain or does oil pressure do the chain tensioning. I also have a couple other questions regarding internals of this motor. I would like to talk with some one who has actually rebuilt one of these motors its a 4.2 supercharged. I have a questions regarding oil pressure

Hello and welcome to justanswer.com
Yes the tensioners are charged by oil pressure. Once installed you pull the pin and they will extend. The chain should be tight. If you rotate the engine by hand clockwise the chain should stay tight. If not then the chain could be stretched. The secondary tensioners can be replaced without removing the timing cover provided you have the tools to set the cams.

the chains were tight when first assembled but when i started the noise started after about 2 min of running the chains only have about 10.000 miles on them. didnt replace due to low mileage, and the chains were quiet when disassembled. maybe oil pressure problem? do you have a schematic of internal oil path or is there something that i need to look at

Jaguar Mechanic: Richard, Jaguar Technician replied 7 years ago
There is not really a diagram showing the oil passages. We can check oil pressure to make sure it is not low.
