Jaguar Vanden Plas: Hello, My father just bought a new car…

Hello, My father just bought...
Hello, My father just bought a new car and gave me his 2005 Jaguar XJ Vandan Plas that has 110,000 MI on it. Engine runs smooth, great highway cruiser (he drove it back and forth from Florida to the northeast so mostly highway miles). The problem with it is it lurches at slow speeds when applying gas. So it cracks the necks with a forward/backward lurch when accelerating from a stop at light acceleration, or when going 40 MPH and accelerating to increase speed to 60 MPH. A sore neck after a day of driving is the result - passengers complain. No warning lights are on. He says it has done this for years and Jags 2003-2009 XJs) just do that. I looked this up on online forums (as if it didn't do it from new, it can't be a design issue - it only has done it the last 3 years apparently) and heard that lurching can be an issue with transmission fluid level not being right, or that the TCM and ECM need to be reset at a Jag dealer with a software update (ZF transmission lurch issue). What is your opinion?

Hello and welcome to justanswer.com

OK usually a jerk or bang feeling just before coming to a complete stop is actually a transmission problem on thee vehicles. The good news is that it can be an easy fix. This problem is usually caused by the TCM (Transmission Control Module). The module will need to be cleared and reprogrammed with a dealer level scan tool. The TCM will learn your driving style and adjust the shifts accordingly. When these shifting adaptations become corrupt it will go into a default shift. This is why the reset and reprogram needs to be completed along with a relearn drive cycle. Your dealer will need to do this with their tool. They will most likely charge you a 1-2 hour labor charge.
