Hello and welcome to justanswer.com
Overall both engines are very strong but both have issues with fluid leaks like oil and coolant from the head gaskets as well as other seals. The main issues with these vehicles were the electrical system. First check the body and frame to make sure it is not rusted out as some do. Next look closely for any signs of fluid leaks. I would recommend the 4.0 6 cylinder over the 12. The 6 has less high failures and is easier and less expensive to maintain. As far as the years go I would recommend a 1995-1997 sedan over the earlier 90s XJ and a 1995-1996 XJS.
Sorry, site dumped question before I finished. Thanks for info.
Located late '90's supercharged XJR, in-line 6, that has 50K miles and ultra clean. Guessing the supercharger brings HP to about 300-325.
In your view, is this over stressing the in-line 6 or should it still be reasonably reliable?
Been away from the computer. Will focus on inline 6-cylinder. One local one is a supercharged 6 (the later 90's XJR), w/ 45,000 miles. Think that version is +/- 320 hp. Safe level of boost/power for the inline 6?
I highly rated your answer, incidentally.
Thanks Richard
