Overall the 2004 S-Type is a solid vehicle. You should pay close attention to how the transmission shifts as harsh up shifting or down shifting is an indication that the TCM (Transmission Control Module) will need to be reprogrammed. Also I have been seeing issues with engine oil leaks from the oil pan gasket as well as power steering leaks from the coolers and racks. Some other issues I see are with the electronic throttle as well as the climate control system as far as a comparison to the XJ they are totally different vehicles when it comes to ride and handling since the XJ has four wheel air suspension.
