Overall th 2005 X type is a solid vehicle and is m$much improved over the previous years. The powertrain/drivetrain is strong but the weak component is the transfer case which is the all wheel drive unit. Sometimes it is just a bearing noise but this can lead to it failing causing the vehicle inoperable. There has also been a few electrical problems but non too serious. As far as the issues you see the water is either a clogged sunroof drain on the passenger side or a faulty trunk seal. Both are not that involved to repair. Of course it may be something else but this is what I see in my experiences. For the steering noise we should first check the fluid level as if it is low it can cause strange noises. If the column was noisy we usually see this when turning the wheel throughout both directions. It can also be the clockspring which is the spiral cable I the front behind the wheel.
