You asked for VIN number--last 6 digits--what is VIN ?

Bought car second hand in 2007 (then about 5 years old)--drove without any problem ti about 8 months ago--then began to suffer from occasional "stop" in engine--almost like a msifiring . Got steadily worse--took it to an automatic transmission expert who dismantled the whole transmission, replaced a solinoid etc--but who himself wasn't totally convinced that he had discovered the cause of or the solution to the problem.
However when he re-assembled he drove for 150 miles without problem, handed back and I drove for about 2 months withput problem -BUT it has now re-occured and is getting worse.
It seems as if the car is struggling to change gear, particularly early in the morning or going up steep hills.
Noticed some improvement when I started to use the 2-3-4-5-S gears but not totally free of problem either.

The VIN is the vehicle identification number which is on the vehicle or registration. This would tell me which transmission you have. Based on your description I think you have the ZF six speed. Your problem is usually caused by the TCM (Transmission Control Module). The adaptations need to be cleared and reset in a specific drive cycle. This is all done using the Jaguar factory service tool. The TCM learns your driving style and will adjust the shifting accordingly. When these adaptations become corrupt it will go into a default shifting and can delete sixth gear in some cases. If the problem returns after the programming then it may be a mechanical problem with valve body/TCM which is one assembly. We should also check the fluid level and condition. Since there is no dipstick this is not easily done as a fill plug needs to be removed from the side of the unit and fluid checked/filled through there when the trans fluid is between 30-40 degrees C.
