Customer: I have a 1997 Jaguar xk8, the problem im having is that while im driving the car the tempeture gage will go to the proper level and as I drive it will start to fall backward as if the car is not warm! I have replaced the thermastat twice!

They are coming on but not staying on!
Ok we should check the connection at the engine coolant temp sensor on the thermostat housing to make sure the connection there is clean and secure. It could be a faulty sensor. We can check this with a scan tool that can read pids or live data to see what the sensor is reading. We can also check this with a digital volt/ohm meter using this chart. Click on the link.

The car over heated about 1 year ago and they replaced the engine coolant temp sensor!
Ok we should still double check the temp sensor readings as well as inspect the sensor/connector and wiring. Also I have seen in some cases a poor mix of coolant and water causing this as well as issues if non Jag coolant was used.

But why would it make the temp gauge go down?
The sensor could be sending a false signal to the ECU. The ECU then sends this info to the cluster on the CAN network.
