What causes constant ticking noise coupled with whining noise when engine is cold?

Constant ticking noise coupled with whining noise when engine is cold. I have a 1999 jaguar xj8 vanden plas that recently underwent an engine replacement after I spun a rod bearing at 100,000 miles. Following the repair everything was fine until about 2,000 miles ago. When I start the car, a subtle tapping noise can be heard from the engine(seems to be more towards the rear of the heads, on the left side[if seated in the car]). Upon acceleration, the noise sounds like a baseball card in bicycle spokes(if you get the reference), its a tap/flapping noise that speeds up as the cars rpms increase(i.e. i can have the same noise at 2,000 rpm in third that i would at 2,000 rpm in second) i haven't necessarily noticed a drop in performance but i haven't engaged sport since or come close to engaging the kick down pedal, since I'm terrified I'll be out another 4k for something absurd. furthermore, theres another very disconcerting noise that happens while driving when the engine is cold, or if i accelerate with purpose while the engine is cold. the noise occurs if you exert the engine even slightly after its startup. once the car reaches the revs needed for a shift(even if I'm driving like an old man) it makes this extremely high pitched whining noise that almost sounds like a plane taking off, and it perpetuates until the car shifts into its next gear. the odd thing is, once the car has warmed up i cannot replicate the noise(or i may be able to, but like i said i have kept it out of sport/not utilized the kick down pedal in fear that my car will brake), or moreover, the driving habits that illicit the noise shortly after i start the car do not produce the same noise once the car is warm. i am perplexed and unsettled by these noises. please help!
