Based on your description I suspect a problem with the starter. If you jump the terminals on the starter and the engine will not crank then try turning the engine over by hand to make sure no accessory or the engine has seized. I will post the instructions for both the alternator and starter. On the V8 the starter can be difficult to access that top bolt.
