Customer: Hello,

I have 04 Jaguar S-Type 4.2 with approx 60K miles. I run the car between Boston and Philly every two weeks or so and once it's on the highway its runs smoothly. However during the period when the car sits between the trips, and on the initial run when driving between 55-60mph the car will shutter and run rough ever so lightly, but noticible. It's consistent, and goes away ater exceedig approx 60 mph? There are no codes reported, and I'm at a loss what could cause the problem. This has been a problem for a couple years, but I feel it may be getting slightly worse. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you

Hello and welcome to justanswer.com

Would you say this feels like a surge when you are cruising at a constant speed? WHen this problem occurs can you see the engine speed fluctuate on the tachometer?

Customer

There is no surge, nor does the tach change. I can feel a slight vibration in the steering wheel, but I can't tell if the problem is engine, steering, or sensor related.

OK then I think the problem is a tire balance issue. I recommend having all your wheels and tires road forced balanced as I suspect a tire(s) may be out of balance.
Customer
I understand your reply but how could the probem manifest at just one speed, and disappear, and not be noticeable at other speeds. I can drive 90 with my hands off the wheel and the car tracks perfectly
That is typical of a tire balance issue. The vibration will usually occur around 50-60 mph which tells me it is not a drivetrain problem. It also could be a worn control arm bushing as the front ones are fluid filled so if they are leaking it can cause a steering wheel vibration issue.
