S Type: 2003 3.0L V6 Petrol Automatic...I reach speeds..front end…

I have an S Type...
I have an S Type Jaguar, 2003 3.0L V6 Petrol Automatic.
The car has developed over the last few weeks a habit of revving on its own (called hunting by the garage) specifically when I reach speeds of 30mph or more up to 60mph and higher. If it stays at 30mph or below I do not experience this. And I have not noticed over 60mph but this may be due to a smaller effect on the rev counter - sometimes I also hear a louder noise from the front end as well during this.
A fuel cleaner was added 2 weeks back but the problem has continued, this was during a major service and the problem was occurring a few weeks before this service.

There is no obvious deterioration of performance in handling or acceleration

Advice would be greatly appreciated
Cheers

Hello and welcome to justanswer.com

Can I have the last six digits of your VIN? Have any warning lights or messages come on? Do you feel this surge at steady cruise? Does it surge about 200 rpms?

Hi Richard,

Currently at work - so do not have access to the VIN until tonight ( on my motorbike as the sun came out)

No warning lights/ no fault or error codes

This normally occurs when at constant speed , at any speed between 35 - 50mph is most noticeable,or when accelerating 35mph+ until 60+

200rpm would be about right - maybe a bit more, but not a significant amount as if flooring it, just as if impatient and keep revving every few seconds. And it seems regular timing once it starts - until I either slow down or speed up.

Jaguar Mechanic: Richard, Jaguar Technician replied 11 years ago

Sorry for the delay.

Based on your description it sounds like the surge is from the Torque converter. Before replacing the converter the Transmission Control Module will need to be reset and reprogrammed with different software which usually corrects the surge. The other posibility is a faulty ignition coil(s) dropping out under load causing a slight missfire.

Richard, this sounds good - could you confirm if diagnostics were ran on the car, would they pick up anything to confirm this? or would these be without logging

And could you give me a guide on the cost of both of these issues? Obviously labour is dependant on the garage - but minor to major repair

Thanks in advance

Cheers

Sometimes a P0741 code may be stored in the ECM or TCM. Usually the engine light or gear box fault warning will be on. If this code is stored then the converter must be replaced. If no codes are stored then the reprogram should be done first. This programming must be done at a main dealer with the Jag factory tool. They will charge about 1.5-2.0 hours labor. for the converter the labor is about 7 hours plus the converter and fluid.
