Customer: I have 104K miles on my 2003 x-type (purchased new 12/02) with the 5-speed JATCO auto-tranny, which, as you know, is a "sealed" transmission using synthetic ATF.

The transmission is fine and shifts smoothly. Jaguar says there is no need to change ATF under "normal" circumstances. I never tow a trailer with this vehicle and I live in So. Calif which has a moderate climate.

I've never observed any indications that there are any leaks (spots on my garage floor etc.)

Since I want to keep this car as long as possible, should I consider having the ATF changed? Would it be cost-effective? How long (how many miles) can this tranny last without any maintenance? Thanks.

Hello and welcome back to justanswer.com

Jaguar and JATCO do not recommend a fluid replacement for maintenance. If the transmission seems to be shifting good any there are no indications of a problem I would not replace the fluid. There is an external cooler behind the lower bumper so you should not have to worry about overheating it when you tow. If you were to replace the fluid there is a drain plug, fill plug and fluid level check plug. Since there is no dipstick this does make things more difficult but a qualified shop can do this for you. The fluid is costly and I only recommend the Jag fluid. I have seen issues on the 2002-2003 transmissions at higher mileage.
