X-Type: ride is very smooth..vibration..whilst driving

Customer Question
I have a X-Type Jaguar...
I have a X-Type Jaguar 2.5 V6 (2002) which has only done 46000. The engine is quiet and the ride is very smooth with no problems with gear change however when I reach around 55mph there appears to be some vibration and excessive road noise. I can only compare the noise to the one you get sometimes when the rear windows are open whilst driving (but they are not) - any ideas what might be causing this ?

Hello and welcome to justanswer.com

Based on your description it sounds like a problem with the propshaft. It is a one piece unit from the transfer case to the rear differential but there is a center support bearing. This bearing can make a similar noise at higher speeds. Since you do not hear the noise throughout the speed range and when slowing down I do not think it is a tyre or wheel bearing.

Hi Richard,

Is the bearing something that can be changed independently or does the whole of the prop shaft need to be replaced ? Do you think it would need to be replaced or would something as simple as lubricating the bearing work ?

Jaguar Mechanic: Richard, Jaguar Technician replied 11 years ago
The bearing is only serviced with the propshaft. What you can do is use a small needle to pierce the bearing then use a grease gun to shoot some lubricant on the bearing to see if this lessens the noise.
