Customer: Richard! Good to talk to you again! 2003 jaguar X-Type, 2.5l v6.
I've got this whining sound that reminds me of a power steering pump whine. It is coming from the engine compartment, when I put the car in neutral and step on the gas, it still makes the sound. Sounds increases with engine speed.
If it were any other car id swear it was the power steering pump. When I extend the steering to the far left or right it doesn't make any additional noise, as most cars that I have owned will do.
FYI: service done within last 2k miles
Propeller shaft replaced
Brakes serviced (rotors turned , pads replaced)
Stabilizer bar links replaced
Front wheel well liners replaced due to contact with Stabilizer bar causing broken plastic.

Hope all is well.
Sounds like an accessory noise from possibly an idler pulley. Listen for the noise from the belt area. Use a long screwdriver and place the tip of it to the bolt securing the pulley to the cover and place your ear to the handle listening for the noise. Do this to all the pulleys. Also go the the other side of the engine where you will see the water pump drive on the passenger side front of the engine. Do the same test to see if you can pinpoint the noise. Let me know how you make out.

Will do.. FYI...There does seem to be a slight variation in idle speed. A kind of up and down over and over. Would that be indiciative of an idle pully as well?
It may also be a vacuum leak. Some times you may hear a whine or hissing noise if the PCV hose under the engine cover has split.
