What causes engine clatter for a couple of minutes when I start it?

Yes, Richard.

When I pull out of my garage in reverse, up an incline , into the street and then forward down the road, I hear it for few another few hundred meters.

When starting up, there's the tinkling clatter of the timing chain (or whatever), and as soon I put it into gear, an additional and distinctinctly different knocking sound.

It's as though the gearbox needs to receive some more oil first, or something (??)

Then, as I say by the time I reach the stop sign 200 meters down the road, it all settles down.

I've only had the car for about two months, but this is how I got it.

This morning there's a whole new question in a full sentence which I want to investigate over the weekend if you don't mind.

I'll get back to you Monday with all my findings. The last service was done by an authorised Jaguar Franchised dealer, so I would assume the oils are correct.

I checked carefully, and also opened the hood so that I could hear exactly where the noises are. It would seem that there is actually only one source of the noise. When I start up (in PARK), the engine has a cluck-cluck-cluck, which gets louder when holding the brake and putting into either REVERSE or DRIVE. Moving forward or backward doesn't change the sound. It now merely seems as though the torqueing factor, when putting it into a gear, places more stress on the problem. That's all it is. The noise is not at the gearbox, but directly above the supercharger in the centre of the engine.

It settles down after a while. So I let the car stand for the day, and checked the oil. It reaches the top end of the LOW mark. I'm wondering if it needs a good and proper oil change, although you may suggest some adjustments or repairs at the timing chain tensioners or lifters
