Hello and welcome to justanswer.com

Are the engine cooling fans coming on? How fast is the engine overheating?

Customer
both fans are working. I had the car ideling in the driveway for an hour, no hint of overheating. soon as I got out on the road, about a mile from home, she starts to run hot, even to where she redlines....when I start to drift and have no throttle to the motor, she'll slowly return to normal, which is at the halfway mark on the temperature gauge. what gives?
Sounds like a flow problem. I see issues with the thermostats as well as the impellers cracking on the water pumps. I would check this first.
Customer
well, I get plenty of heat...I had the top off the coolant resevoir and when I give it throttle, I can see movement in the coolant and when I back off, the backflow can push the coolant out...that is what made me ruleout the water pump and thermostat. I'm thinking a good old flushing would do the trick, before I spend $$ at union park jag?
Ok first check the area between the radiator and condenser. If it's clogged with leaves or other debris this will cause a lack of air moving across the radiator. Next feel the radiator hoses to see if they are cold which is an indication of a sticking thermostat.
Customer
OK....the top hose was hot...and the bottom hose was luke warm....hmm....may just be the thermostat..??
Yes it may. You will feel a difference in the two as the radiator will cool the coolant going back into the engine.
Customer
well, is that normal with the bottom hose being cooler that the top? I kind of wish these cars were like my first car, a 65 Malibu 2 door coupe 273....so easy to work on....
The hose on the passenger side should be cooler than the hose on the driver side. The temp may not be the problem but the flow if the thermostat is sticking.
Customer
ok. Passanger bside is the Hot, or upper, and the driver is the cooler or lower in this circumstance. good job. I'll get it to the dealer....thank you.
You are very welcome. Let me know how you make out.
