Customer: Hi will a motor from a 1998 jaguar xj8 4.0 liter work in my 2000 jaguar xj8 4.0 liter both non turbo they look the same in respect but not even jaguar deailer will tell me ....junk yards say no but they look the same the vin. number for the 1998 motor is 7 th digit is 2 and the my 2000 the 8th digit is 2. i can give you full vin numbers if needed and if not whats the difference in these motors ... thanks Tim

There are differences in the engines. The 1998 has a different variable valve timing, intake and throttle. In order to make it work you will need the complete engine, wiring harness that has not been cut and the ECM. Also the ECM will need to be configured with the Jag service tool for the security system.

No the transmissions are not the same for 1998. The 1999-2003 is the same as long as both engines are not supercharged.

Hi Richard, thanks for the help ! one more thing please before i scrap they idea. i have the complete motor from the 2000 is the timming system able to be changed from that motor to the 1998 motor or would the heads have to be changed also ....thanks Tim
Unfortunately the oil passages that feed the VVT system is different so it will make the swap impossible.
