Customer: 98 XJ8, 42K orig mi, ownd since new. Car runs with key removed frm ignition. Lights stay on so remvd pos bat cable to preserve new bat. 10/09 had burnt? starter, throttle body, ECM and AC relays replaced by Jag Dlr in CHS,SC. Make sense? Alrm was soundng for no reason. Now can't restart engine. Sounds as if elctrc mtr undr hood running when battery cabl attached. No Dlr in area. Need a competent Jag mechanic. How to find? Is there way to start car to drive it to a Dlr, 165 mi away to avoid tow?? Better yet,is there Jag mechanic in Wilmntn, NC or Myrtle Bch, SC areas u recommend that can help? Can you suggest a "next best" Dlr to work on this Jag? I love this car but this is ridiculous. Pls Help!!

Your problem is usually caused by a shorting transit relay connector in the trunk. There was a relay hooked to the battery terminal that is removed during the new car prep. If this connector shorts out or corrodes it will cause your problem. There is a single wire (White/blue) on a connector near the battery. If this wire got pinched or corroded it will cause this issue.

I see the white/blue wire, but it is not attached or hooked to anything. It has a female plug on the end but there appears to be no male plug for it to attach to. It extends from a bunch of wires that run through the trunk towards? the right rear tail lights. What should I be looking for? Is there a place that this white/blue wire should be attached to the battery or elsewhere?
No that conector is blank but if it was pinched under the battery or corroded it will cause this problem. Since that wire looks ok then you may have a faulty ignition switch. Try just disconnecting the negative battery terminal cable for one hour to power down all the modules.

The positive cable has been disconnected for 2 days. Just disconnected the negative cable per your instructions. Might that enable me to start vehicle? I have never had problem starting the car assuming there was any indication that a power link had been made through the ignition, ie the starter always turned immediately and if it turned then the vehicle immediately started. Can any good mechanic replace an ignition switch (assuming that problem) or do I need a Jag dealer? I don't want someone unfamiliar with Jags to cause something else to break.
If you can find a European repair shop in your area they should be able to replace the switch. On the early XJs I have replaced many reader/excitor coils. This is the part around the ignition cylinder that reads the key.
