First let me say that I have been working on Jags for 11 years at the same dealer and am a Jag fan and enthusist. Personally I like the 2003-2006 XKR coupe. As you probably know the XK8 was introduced for the 1997 model year. Most of the issues with the engine were resolved by 2000. The problems with the early engines were the Nikasil linings. Nikasil is a coating that is used to line the inside of engine cylinders. BMW and Jag both use this. If a nikasil engine is exposed to high sulphur fuel the nikasil linings will deteriorate and this can lead to a loss in compression. The other issue were the timing chain tensioners. They sometimes would crack which can cause the engine to jump timing and result in engine damage. In 2003 the XK was redesigned with a new 4.2 liter engine and 6 speed auto transmission. The 4.2 is a great engine and the transmission is also very strong. The early ones did however have prolems with the torque converters as well as the software in the trans mission control module.
