I'm trying to get the starter off my 2004 4.2 V-8 S-type Jag. It's giving me a fit. I can't get a wrench up there in that hole! What's the best procedure for removing this thing? Thanks!

Hello and welcome to Just answer.com, Super mechanic here. About your vehicle.

It is normally good to use a swivel socket on the bolts with an extension and a ratchet. However, let me give you the steps from the data base. Let me know if you have any trouble with it, thanks

I understand and have already addressed all the steps provided with the earlier answer with one exception: I am unable to remove the upper starter retaining bolt (bolt near and slightly behind starter solenoid). Are special tools required to remove this bolt or do other parts have to be removed to access this top bolt?
Hello and maybe I can help as I have done this job many times. That bolt is a PAIN. I recommend removing the engine mount. This sounds harder then it actually is. First support the bottom of the engine with a jack and piece of wood. Remove the bottom 15mm nut and the four 13mm bolts holding the mount bracket to the engine. Jack up the engine and get that mount out of the way. The top bolt is hard to see so you just have to feel for it but at least you have plenty of room.
